The Nation's First "GREEN" Animal Shelter!

The new shelter is designed to facilitate our mission, care for companion animals in need and to contribute to their lives and the lives of the families that care for them.

But the new shelter will also be designed to care for our community and our planet.

Dog playroom floors will be made of recycled tires.
Rain water will be collected and then used for landscaping.
The earth's natural temperature will be used to heat the building.
Large barn doors will mechanically open during hot days to allow the facility to be cooled.

With its emphasis on environmental sustainability, use of recycled materials, a comprehensive environment for people to interact with animals, and a commitment to animal health and comfort, the new Pet Adoption Center is also registered to become the nation's first "green" certified animal shelter according to the U.S. Green Building Council.

The new Adoption Center is the embodiment of Tompkins County's most profound ethical principles: do what is good for people, for pets, and for the planet.

What is "GREEN" Design?

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a voluntary, consensus-based national standard for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings.

Based on well-founded scientific standards, LEED emphasizes state of the art design and construction practices that significantly reduce or eliminate the negative impact of buildings on the environment and occupants in five broad areas:

Sustainable site planning
Safeguarding water and water efficiency
Energy efficiency and renewable energy
Conservation of materials and resources
Indoor environmental quality
