On June 18, the Tompkins County SPCA held the official groundbreaking
for the new shelter. Named after Mrs. Dorothy Park of the Park Foundation,
who gave a lead gift to the new facility, the Dorothy Park Pet Adoption
Center will solidify the community's absolute commitment to saving each and
every healthy and treatable homeless dog and cat.
The Dorothy Park Pet Adoption Center will include:
- a surgery room for spay/neuter of all shelter animals and medical care for
injured ones
- a grooming facility so that dogs and cats waiting for loving homes look
their best
- 10 acres of walking trails to keep dogs healthy and happy
- a pond for the dogs to swim in during spring and summer for exercise and
stimulation
- a fenced off-leash area the size of a football field where dogs can play
ball, get to know their prospective adopters and have fun with one another
- complete energy efficiency and environmental emphasis in design with a
focus on protection of wetlands and trees on the property, water
conservation, indoor air quality, and sustainability.
- an environment designed to promote animal health and well-being.
At the new shelter, every dog has room to
learn, play and live. Natural light streams from windows and skylights and
toys offer entertainment and stimulation. For cats, gone are the blocks of
small isolated cages. Instead, they will have private condos, with perches
for sunning, trees for climbing, and lots of toys for stimulation. Through
picture windows, they can enjoy a view of the outdoors.
