Sugar’s story is one of selfless courage and devotion. She was found by a park ranger with her kittens in tow. Not an unusual story, except she had a broken pelvis and was in constant pain, yet managed to drag herself around to take care of her little ones. Now, after she’s healed and her kittens found loving homes of their own, Sugar has found her forever home as well, one utterly deserving of a cat whose character is true and love is boundless.

Celebrating Five Years

This June marks the 5th anniversary of the opening of the Dorothy and Roy Park Pet Adoption Center at the SPCA of Tompkins County. This milestone is marked by the names and faces of the thousands of companion animals who have been saved since the shelter became a "no-kill, open admission" facility.

The SPCA Board of Directors resolved to become a "no-kill" shelter in 1999, and with incredible support from Dorothy and Roy Park and the generosity of the Tompkins County community, the new building was completed and opened in June of 2004, making the goal of saving all healthy, treatable, manageable and rehabilitatable domestic animals a reality.

In the last five years, the SPCA has taken in 3,807 dogs and 8,508 cats - and numerous rabbits, guinea pigs, mice, gerbils, rats, hamster, birds, snakes, ferrets, and more! More than 91% of these animals have been saved and have found new homes. In fact, 94.18% of animals brought to the shelter in 2008 were saved, one if not the highest 'live release rates' in the country.

Celebrating five years in the new building is simple for shelter staff. Every time an animal seeks safety and finds a new home, there is cause to rejoice. Animals residing currently in the Adoption Center greet volunteers, staff, and potential adopters every day from their animal-friendly, environmentally-friendly housing.

Join us in celebrating by visiting the Adoption Center and adopting a new forever friend!
