How do I know what to expect with my new pet?

When you adopt an animal from the TC SPCA, you receive an adoption kit that includes lots of information that will help you learn about being a responsible and sensible pet owner.

You can also check out some of this information online:

How do I know that the pet I bring home will be healthy?

All our shelter guests receive a general health and behavior screening, vaccinations, and are spayed/neutered. If the pet is old enough, he/she will receive a rabies vaccination as well. The SPCA has regular veterinary care available for all animals and makes every effort to ensure that the animals are healthy before being made available for adoption

What if my pet gets sick?

You will receive a certificate for one free checkup at a veterinarian for your new pet. But if health problems develop in the first two weeks, you can bring the animal back and the adoption fee  would be refunded (some fees not refunded.)

I can no longer care for my pet. Does it cost anything to bring her to you?

A fee of between $20-100 is required to help us pay for your animal's care, depending on our evaluation of how long we think your pet will be with us. Highly adoptable animals will have a lower fee; animals that may be difficult to place will have a higher fee. Please note that we only accept animals from Tompkins County (proof of residency is required) and you must make an appointment before bringing an animal in.

Will you guarantee that you will find her a home?

We will make every effort, but we cannot guarantee that your pet might not have to be euthanized for health or temperament reasons. Before giving up a pet, please try everything you can to find her a suitable home. Not sure how? click here.
