We adopted Elle (we call her Ellie) at the SPCA last summer (2004). We met her at the Farmer's market and she was the last of 5 or 6 pit bull sisters to be adopted. We are very happy that she waited for us. She is a joy to have in the family. She loves people and showers all that she meets with kisses. She also loves other dogs and looks forward to playing with new friends. We have two cats in our family and Elle is a good sport with them as well.

Her favorite activities include riding in the car and taking walks in the woods behind our house. It took her a while to appreciate swimming, but now this is also one of her favorite things to do.

2005 Statistics

In 2005, the Tompkins County SPCA saved 100% of all healthy, friendly dogs and cats, 100% of treatable sick and injured animals, and 100% of healthy feral cats. Overall, 92% of dogs and cats were saved. The number of animals killed represents a 75% decline from five years ago when we instituted a No Kill, Open Admission policy for Tompkins County. With a euthanasia rate of only 1.8 dogs and cats for every 1,000 human residents, the death rate in Tompkins County is over eight times less than the national average of 15.5 dogs and cats per 1,000 residents, and for the past few years has been the lowest of any community, anywhere in the United States.

Each and every dog and cat killed in 2005 was non-rehabilitatable— meaning the animal either suffered from incurable conditions or from viciousness.
