About Adoption

When you adopt a dog or cat from the SPCA of Tompkins County, your new friend comes with a whole lot of extras to get you started:

  • All pets have been evaluated for good health and behavior.
  • Pets have been vaccinated for many diseases (puppies and kittens have received their first set but will need more as they grow).
  • All dogs and cats (including puppies and kittens) are spayed or neurtered before going home.
  • All dogs and cats are microchipped before going home.
  • A starter bag of Science Diet pet food is included with each adoption.
  • A free engraved identification tag is provided for each pet.
  • A free veterinary exam honored by most local veterinarians (within two weeks of adoption).
  • Free dog behavior counseling as needed, to help you and your dog adjust to his or her new home.
  • Discounted tuition for SPCA Dog Obedience Classes.
  • Staff support for questions or concerns about your pet seven days a week (except national holidays). Call (607) 257-1822.

If you are ready to consider adopting a new forever friend, please stop by our shelter, visit with the animals, and chat with our adoption counselors to find the perfect match!

Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, Pet Rats, and other small animals are often available for adoption and also come with many benefits.

Stories

"We adopted Lilian from the SPCA of Tompkins County in 2002. She was the only animal with a warning sign on her enclosure, which read “Please ask for assistance.  I’m very feisty.” Years later, she is still pretty feisty, crazy, a fantastic hunter (indoors only), an amazing source of entertainment, and a wonderful, occasionally sweet companion. I love my cat. She makes me laugh, and trusts me enough to let me trim her claws without too much fussing."
