Gifts of Retirement Funds, Life Insurance, and Bank Accounts

Naming the SPCA of Tompkins County as a beneficiary of your retirement plan, IRA, life insurance policy, or bank/brokerage account is a generous way to make a legacy gift outside of a will or living trust. Like a bequest, these gifts help ensure the future medical care, housing, and programs that help the abandoned and surrendered animals of Tompkins County.

Beneficiary designations are easy to implement and giving retirement funds can be a tax-wise strategy for some supporters. For retirement and life insurance accounts, you will need to request a change of beneficiary form from your plan or policy administrator. For bank or brokerage accounts you will need to fill out the appropriate forms as required by your financial or legal advisor.

The Barbara M. Hall Planned Giving Society

The Barbara M. Hall Planned Giving Society was created in 2012 to honor a generous bequest from Barbara to the SPCA of Tompkins County. A graduate of Cornell University in 1943, she began her career as a high school science teacher in Lydonville, NY and later went on to Washington DC where she was a feature article writer for Science Service Magazine. In 1953 she began a pioneering 50+ year career in radio broadcasting. She travelled extensively throughout the world, including all seven continents, and hosted WHCU’s Travel Talk where she shared news of faraway places and possibilities to others throughout the thousands of interviews she collected in her travels. Barbara’s love for all animals and her commitment to the SPCA to make our work possible was unrivaled.

All bequests and beneficiary gifts in excess of $5,000 are included in the Barbara M. Hall Planned Giving Society and are recognized on our naming wall in our Pet Adoption Center.
